Hailee Steinfeld was born on December 11, 1996 in the Tarzana neighborhood in Los Angeles, California to her parents Cheri Domasin and Peter Steinfeld. Her mother is an interior designer, while her father is a personal fitness trainer. Hailee is the younger sister of NASCAR driver, Griffin Steinfeld. She was raised in Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks, California, where she attended Ascension Lutheran School, Conejo Elementary, and Colina Middle School before being homeschooled until graduating high school in 2015.
Hailee began her acting career in 2007, appearing in an episode of the comedy “Back to You”, followed by starring in the short film Heather: A Fairy Tale playing Heather and Talia Alden in the short film She’s a Fox. She began 2010 appearing as Bethany in an episode of “Sons of Tucson” as well as short films
2014 began with the dramatic thriller 3 Days to Kill, playing Zooey Renner with Kevin Costner and Connie Nielsen, followed by the Tommy Lee Jones film The Homesman playing Tabitha Hutchinson. She would next voice the role of Anna Sasaki for the American release of the animated film When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Mânî). Hailee played the role of Louise in the western drama The Keeping Room, a film about three women during the American Civil War defending their home and themselves from two rogue soldiers from the Union Army. She also narrated the voice of Anne Frank for an exhibition of Anne Frank at the Museum of Tolerance. Next, Hailee appeared in the music video of Bad Blood by Taylor Swift before reuniting with her Ender’s Game co-star Asa Butterfield for Ten Thousand Saints, playing Eliza. Hailee’s next film, the action comedy Barely Lethal, was released, also starring Samuel L. Jackson and Dove Cameron. She next joined the cast of Pitch Perfect 2 as Emily Junk in 2015 after signing a recording contract with Republic Records. In July, she released an acoustic version of “Stitches” with Shawn Mendes, followed by the release of her first single “Love Myself” which would go on to become a double-platinum single. In November, Hailee’s EP Haiz was released, receiving mixed reviews. She appeared in the music video for “Sing” by the Pentatonix as the woman with headphones. In 2017, Hailee released her single “Most Girls,” peaking at Number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She collaborated with Machine Gun Kelly for his second single “At My Best,” followed by a collaboration with Alesso, Florida Georgia Line, and Watt for the song “Let Me Go,” debuting in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart chart. She won Best Push Artist at the MTV EMAs and Musical.ly’s Top Covered Artist award at the Billboard Music Awards. At the end of the year, Hailee reprised her role as Emily Junk for Pitch Perfect 3, following the Bellas on a USO Tour headed by DJ Khaled. In January 2018, she released her next single “Capital Letters” for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack, then was featured on MNEK’s single “Colour” as well as the song “Ordinary Day” by Logic. Throughout the year, there was speculation whether or not Hailee would be joining the Disney+ Marvel series “Hawkeye”, which became official in December when it was announced during Disney’s investor day event. She plays the role of Kate Bishop, who will take over the name of Hawkeye from Clint Barton.
In 2021, The third and final season of Dickinson premiered on November 5. Hailee voices the role of Vi in Netflix’s show Arcane based off of the League of Legends universe. Hawkeye is set to premiere with 2 episodes on November 24 introducing the character of Kate Bishop into the MCU.
Hailee endorses charities, many organizations with a focus on improving the lives of children, which include: What’s Your Mission?, No Kid Hungry, WE Movement, The Ryan Seacrest Foundation, and Make-A-Wish Foundation, among others. She has attended charity events for the Breast Cancer Foundation’s Hot Pink Party in 2014 and WE Day in 2019. Hailee sang “Santa Claus in Coming to Town” in 2016 with other celebrities to raise money to aid the homeless in New York City and in 2020, she joined her Pitch Perfect castmates in doing an acapella cover of Beyonce’s “Love on Top” to raise money for UNICEF.
